Texas has a dropout crisis, and we rank near the bottom – 43rd in the nation – in graduating students. In today’s information economy 90% of all new jobs require more than a high school diploma. That’s why Senator Hinojosa expanded a proven dropout recovery program to give students a second chance to earn their diploma.
- Initiated the Dropout Recovery Program in Hidalgo County which teams local high schools with South Texas College, so students can get help completing the missing classes or final school exit exams they need to get their diploma.
- Authored the Statewide Dropout Recovery Bill in 2011 that expanded a proven dropout recovery program to all Texas schools to give young people a second chance at their education.
- Secured $11.5 million for Communities in Schools, a support program empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life.
- Recognized as a champion of education and received the “Great Equalizer” for all Texans award from South Texas College.
